Los Angeles, Calif., United States (4E) – “Snow White and the Huntsman” took in $ 56.3 million in its weekend debut, grabbing the No.1 spot at the box office.
The revisionist fairy tale stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron. The win was applauded by Universal, which spent some $ 170 million producing the flick.
Dropping a spot to land at No. 2 was “Men in Black 3″ with $ 29.3 million. To date, the third in a series starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones has earned $ 112.3 million domestically in just 10 days.
“The Avengers” finished third with a weekend take in North American theaters of $ 20.3 million. The added revenue was enough to push the Marvel superhero movie past the $ 533.3 million total of “The Dark Knight” to become the third-highest grossing domestic release ever, behind only Avatar ($ 760.5 million) and Titanic ($ 658.6 million).
In addition, over the weekend, “The Avengers” passed “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2″ to become the third biggest movie ever globally. The movie has so far earned $ 1.36 billion worldwide.
Finishing at No. 4 was “Battleship” with $ 4.8 million, and close behind to round out the top five was “The Dictator,” starring Sasha Baron Cohen.
