Los Angeles, Calif., United States (4E) – “The Avengers” continued to stay atop the weekend box office for the third consecutive week.
Disney’s superhero sensation took in $ 55.1 million domestically and $ 56 million overseas, handily beating three big newcomers.
The blockbuster is approaching the 1.2 billion mark worldwide: $ 457.1 million in domestic receipts and $ 723.3 million internationally.
“Avengers” sank the much-hyped “Battleship,” which opened a distant second with $ 25.4 million in North American theaters. Universal’s board game adaption stars Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s comedy “The Dictator” came in third with $ 17.4 million. Since its debut last Wednesday, the film, in which Cohen plays a tyrannical third-world leader, has grossed $ 24.5 million.
Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows,” starring Johnny Depp, slipped from No. 2 to fourth place with $ 12.8 million.
Rounding out the top was the Lionsgate pregnancy comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez, “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” with $ 10.5 million.
