Washington, United States (4E) – Hackers on Tuesday broke into Associated Press’ (AP) Twitter account, creating a hoax that President Barack Obama got injured in twin blasts at the White House.
The stock markets spooked on the fake news with the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 130 points, or 0.9 percent, and the S&P 500 dropping 12 points, or 0.8 percent. The AP account on Twitter showed a brief alert that read as “Breaking: Two explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.”
However, the wire service immediately suspended its service, announcing that the hackers hacked its Twitter account.
“Advisory: AP Twitter account has been hacked. Tweet about an attack at the White House is false. We will advise more as soon as possible,” AP-CorpComm posted.
Talking to reporters, White House spokesman Jay Carney confirmed about the safety on the president. “I can say that the president is fine. I was just with him,” Carney said shortly after the fake tweet.
