Wellington, New Zealand (4E) – A pilot whale, stranded on a beach close to the start of the Rakiura Great Walk on Stewart Island , New Zealand Rakiura on Wednesday, has been euthanized.
The 3.5m whale was discovered near the bridge at Little River by a ranger carrying out maintenance on the popular walking track on Wednesday.
To prevent prolonged suffering, officials decided to euthanize the whale.
DOC staff carried out a search of the coastal area surrounding Little River by boat to ensure that no further whales were in danger of stranding, but all beaches were clear and no further animals were sighted in the water.
The whale will be left to decompose naturally on the beach with this reports said that Iceland has resumed its commercial hunting of fin whales after a two-year suspension by landing the first of an expected 180 whales in Hvalfjördur .
