Brussels, Belgium (4E) – The European Commission about Wednesday fined $ 731 million to American software giant Microsoft for not marketing alternative internet browsers besides Internet Explorer to consumers inside the 27-nation European Union bloc.
After a past EU competition research, Microsoft had agreed to advertise an EU-introduced Browser Choice Screen pop-up which was established inside March 2010.
But, the U.S. firm failed to incorporate the feature inside its Windows 7 update inside February 2011 plus described the omission because a mere “technical error”.
Responding to the EC’s announcements, a Microsoft spokesman mentioned, “We take full responsibility for the technical mistake which caused this issue plus have apologized for it. We offered the Commission with a complete plus candid assessment of the condition, plus you have taken methods to improve the software development plus additional processes to aid avoid this mistake – or anything synonymous – inside the future.”
