Mobile, AL, United States (4E) – Fire from a burning barge on the Mobile River in Alabam died out Thursday but three people who suffered serious burns when the vessel exploded Wednesday night are in critical condition at a local hospital.
The Mobile Fire and Rescue Department reported on its Twitter feed that fire was out at 6 a.m. and the workers who were cleaning the barge docked at Alabama’s Marine Gas Free Facility when it exploded are being treated at the University of South Alabama Medical Center. Hospital spokesman Bob Lowry said the injured remains in critical condition.
Firefighters let the fire fueled by gasoline to burn out throughout the night because the barge of Oil Recovery Co. was unstable.
Seven explosions were heard while the barge was burning, the first at 8:30 p.m. CDT on Wednesday and the last at 2 a.m.
Fire broke out on the barge while it was being cleaned and caught the stored gasoline causing the explosions.
Coast Guard investigators are on the scene Thursday to find out the cause of the fire and explosions.
